About The Event

Old Dominion University hosts the 35th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Observance at the Chartway Arena (formerly the Ted Constant Center) and it is open to the public at no cost.  Atumpan opens the event by providing music to set the ambiance for the event and continues the merriment as awards, poems, and discussions play out to create a wondrous and mememorable event.  Here's how to plan:

  • Arrive at 6:15-6:30pm to park in the garage near 43rd Street and Hampton Blvd
  • Stroll in to rub shoulders with academic philanthropists, historians, students, and average people who all desire to be great
  • Enjoy the music of Atumpan as you get settled
  • Hear Tim Siebles, Virginia's former Poet Laureate
  • See the unveiling of commissioned artwork
  • Engage in a panel discussion that is facilitated by Addie Richburg, Executive Director of the 400 Years of African American History Commission
